Become a Host Family

“Becoming a host family is one of the greatest joys we have experienced together as a family. Our intent was to bless a young man with a place to stay while pursuing soccer dreams, but we were truly the one’s blessed tenfold.  These young men have become a part of our family…brothers, mentors and friends to our children.  It has been a joy to watch them grow personally and professionally.  These young men and their families have become lifelong friends.” The Archie Family

(Archie Family) Conversation with my 10 year old:

Jude - “Mom, I have brothers from all over the world”

Me - “Yes, yes you do…how cool is that?”

Jude - “That makes me 1/2 Irish, 1/2 Honduran, 1/2 English, 1/2 German…”

Me - “That’s a lot of halves…”

Jude (with a huge smile on his face) - “Yes it is.”

Host Family Program

The St. Louis Lions are always looking for local families to house a men or women's player during their summer season. (Approximately May-July). This opportunity provides the players a home away from home while trying to reach their goals at a professional level.

What is expected of host families? Not much really...we ask that the host families offer a bed and some meals, as our players are signed as amateurs in order to maintain their collegiate availability.

The best way to support your Lion is to come to as many games as you can (home and away) during the the season. They love to see you there!

FAQ'S

Do I have to take them to and from practices and games? - No, players are asked to find their own transportation and often pair with another player who has their own transportation.

My family is busy, how will I find time to be there with them? - The Lions are quite busy themselves, and spend most of the day training, participating in community events, traveling for away games, and some have part time jobs as well.

What if I cannot be home to cook them dinner? - These are mostly college age men, and are used to fending for themselves...you may even get lucky and host a player who likes to cook!

TESTIMONIALS

Steines Family  "We are really enjoying having the boys. Jimmie and Greg are both easy to have around, interact with our kids well, are eager to help and are just great guys to have as role models for our boys. We also got to interact some with the boys Harry hosted and they were also fantastic."
From Chris and Laura Steines.

Woemmel Family  "An extra bedroom, another mouth to feed and a bit more laundry was a small price to pay for the enjoyment that we received back from our host Lion’s player, Jonah.  This was our first year hosting a Lions player as we had heard from many families what a great experience it was to have a player join them for the summer.  Certainly our experience was much better than expected.  Our player was very respectful and molded well with our family.  It was truly our pleasure to have him.

We wish the Lions a great season next year and will be happy to host another player.  It is our hopes that Jonah will be able to return as he is always welcome to our house and thankful that a friendship has bonded with all the members of our family." Go Lions, The Woemmel Family

Mitchell Family  "Mike and I have enjoyed having Santi for the season. We have two adult daughters and now a son! We all had many laughs and fun times. From Santi learning English to us "trying" to learn a little Spanish. He fit right in with our family of two married daughters, 8 grandkids and 2 dogs. Santi had a great sense of humor which was good because we like jokes! We learned just how dedication meant so much to make your dream of playing soccer come true. He is truly dedicated. He wrote us a sweet letter when he left, part of it said, "thanks for supporting me. You went to my soccer matches and made me feel proud and I had more reason to play the best that I can". We have decided to always keep in touch. Friends for life!! Thank you for this opportunity." Mike & Darlene Mitchell

Hicks Family "Our family has had the pleasure of hosting three(NOW 4 including 2018 season) amazing young men over the last few years. I cannot begin to explain the unbreakable bond these players form with your family! Our summers are packed with fun having these guys around. From fishing to golf, Crown Candy kitchen, lazy days playing games, Lions soccer and watching them all kick a ball around in the backyard - the season flies by. When we say goodbye, it's like sending your own kid back to college. Throughout the year, we keep up with them, send and receive small gifts to/from them, and plan their next visit with us. And every year we say we are going to take a "hosting break" for a year - but we never can. Having these extraordinary young men around change our lives every year - and we hope to change theirs as well." Katie Hicks
